Solid, undivided walls cause a feeling of monotony and boredom. It’s another matter when the surfaces separated by molding are painted in different colors or covered with textured wallpaper of various shades. Decorative molding for walls, dividing the room into parts, visually increases the area of the room and creates a feeling of lightness.

Wall moldings are made from various materials:

  • gypsum;
  • polystyrene (foam);
  • polyurethane;
  • tree.

Gypsum moldings are very easy to restore, do not turn yellow over time, are strong, durable and safe to use. It is not for nothing that this material has been successfully used for finishing walls and ceilings since the Renaissance. The only quality that gypsum products lack is elasticity.

Moldings for walls made of foam plastic and polyurethane are flexible, resistant to moisture and temperature changes. Therefore, in most cases decorative panels made from these materials are used in bathrooms and kitchens. Foam and polyurethane moldings are also used to decorate unsightly surfaces. The disadvantage of polystyrene foam, unlike polyurethane, is its susceptibility to mechanical stress. Decorating walls with moldings made of polyurethane and foam plastic will not be very expensive due to the ease of installation and low cost of materials.

Wooden moldings are durable and easy to process. But at the same time, they do not tolerate moisture and are much more expensive than moldings made from other materials.

How to stick molding on a wall?

The surface before sticking the molding must be plastered and primed for better adhesion of the materials. After the primer has dried, you need to mark the placement of the planks.

Next, you need to decide how to glue the moldings. This depends on the material from which they are made. For light-weight products made of polystyrene foam and polyurethane, ordinary wallpaper glue or a PVA adhesive mixture is sufficient. Gypsum moldings can be attached to a special gypsum solution or polyurethane glue. But wooden planks cannot withstand any glue; they are attached to nails.

The glued moldings dry for 5-6 hours, after which the excess glue is thoroughly sanded off. Joints, seams and places where the planks meet the wall must be puttied. After the putty has dried, which is at least 12 hours, the cleaned surface of the molding can be painted and wallpaper can be glued to the walls.

Colored decorative moldings for walls

The need to paint wall molding can be caused by various reasons:

  • the original color of the decorative strips may look grayish against the background of a snow-white ceiling;
  • the desire to divide the wall surface into parts using a contrasting color of the molding;
  • focus on decorative decoration;
  • shade the molding so that it does not merge with the wall.

Designers recommend painting moldings in bright colors. Colored wall moldings attract attention and make the interior colorful and unusual.
