Wall decoration plays a big role when working with room design. You can decorate all the walls with wallpaper in pastel colors, making them a good backdrop for unusual furniture and accessories, or you can decorate one of the walls with textured plaster or a theme appliqué, making it the main decoration of the room. It all depends on your imagination and financial resources. Let’s look at the most popular techniques that designers use when decorating an apartment.
Decorating a wall in the living room
Many people perceive the living room as a place where they should feel a relaxing atmosphere of home comfort and peace. There are also those who prefer something more youthful, bright and dynamic. Using a certain type of finishing materials, you can create the desired wall design and create a certain mood in the room:
- Decorating walls with fabric. The beautiful fabric on the wall is reminiscent of ancient interiors, palace decorations with tapestries, damasks and jacquards. For finishing you need to use elastic, stain-resistant material based on linen, cotton, viscose or wool. Decoration can be done in two ways: stretch the fabric over the frames and attach them to the wall, or attach the canvas directly to the wall.
- Decorating walls with wallpaper. Wallpaper is selected depending on the size and lighting of the room. In a small dark living room, it is advisable to choose light-colored wallpaper with a small floral or geometric pattern. Canvases with vertical stripes look good. For spacious rooms with high ceilings, you can use richly colored trellises with large, expressive patterns. If you want to add some zest to the interior, then cover the front wall with beautiful photo wallpaper.
- Decorating walls with moldings. Molding is a volumetric profile decorated with convex and carved decorative elements. It can be mounted along the ceiling moldings or over the entire wall area. Molding can also be used to frame important decorative elements, such as family photos, panels or tapestries.
- Decorating walls with plaster. Using textured plaster, you can recreate the structure of stone, leather and create an unusual pattern. If the house has uneven walls, then “rough” plaster of a rich color will perfectly disguise them. If desired, you can use a coating with a mother-of-pearl effect, which will make the living room more elegant.

Along with the listed methods, wall painting and applique are also used. Decorating the walls with butterflies cut out of black paper looks very beautiful. Each figure is glued to a pin and attached to the wallpaper. If you use 30-40 butterflies, you can create an interesting 3D effect on the wall.

Decorating the walls in the kitchen
The wall covering for this room should be water-repellent and easy to clean. Wallpaper and fabric are used very rarely here. Instead, slab, stone, and plastic panels are used. Let’s take a closer look at each decor option.
- Decorating walls with stone and brick. Natural stone and panels imitating brickwork are used for finishing. Thanks to them, the kitchen takes on a slightly rough, rural look. Designers call this style “Provence” or “country”.
- Decorating walls with paint. In the kitchen, you can use water-based, alkyd or polyurethane paint. It is advisable to choose the color of the walls in the same range as the furniture or appliances.
- Ceramic tiles. It can be used for cladding walls and the functional area above the stove. The tile looks quite elegant and is easy to clean.
