To optimize the space of a small home, you often have to use the space for other purposes. One way to expand the space in your home is to place a cabinet or shelves under the stairs. What can we say, you can generally build a separate room under the stairs or place a wardrobe, and we will tell you how to do this in this article.
Wardrobe under the stairs
Placing a full-fledged wardrobe under the stairs is a dream that can easily be realized. All that is required is to find manufacturers who are ready to fulfill such an unusual order, and then the only thing left to do is to make a niche and install the cabinet itself there. You can go the economical route and simply close the niche you have made with a sliding door.
Such a built-in wardrobe under the stairs is extremely convenient, especially if the staircase is located at the entrance to the house. By equipping the front of such a cabinet with a mirror, you will visually expand the space of the hallway and make it functionally useful.
DIY wardrobe under the stairs
Let’s take the path of greater resistance and figure out how to make an under-stairs closet yourself.
All you need is a pair of hands and some tools, namely: an angle grinder, a drill, a tape measure and the material with which you will cover the walls.
- First of all, cover the floor with polyethylene and mark the location of the future door on the wall.
- Having made a niche in the wall with a grinder, begin installing the future door: install the frame in the opening, placing the hinges.
- Take measurements along the walls using a tape measure, and attach your sheathing material with nails, in a normal case it could be plywood, which should be painted white before installation, as this will be inconvenient to do from the inside. It is better to paint our closet in light colors, since this place will not be lit enough, and without proper painting it will resemble a closet.
- Now install the beams on which your shelves will be attached; their width should not exceed 2.5 cm. After that, you can place the shelves themselves.
- If you want to place additional shelves under the stairs, you can also use the space under the steps themselves. We do not recommend doing this yourself, as this method requires proper fastening, which can only be installed by professionals.
