Door finishing occupies a special place in DIY design (from the English phrase “do it yourself”, do it yourself). After all, doors visually wear out much faster than functionally – if they look tattered, they can last for many more years. Moreover, old doors were often made conscientiously, from good types of wood – products of similar quality today cost a lot of money. In Europe, old wooden doors are used not only for their intended purpose – they also serve as a material for furniture design, serving as shelves, headboards, table tops, etc.
When decorating doors with your own hands, a distinction is made between the design of the door itself and the decoration of the doorway (arch) and the surrounding space. Excellent role models in door design are English country houses. Among other things, they widely practice finishing doors (more precisely, door arches) with decorative stone. The English style is suitable for decorative door decoration both in a mansion and in an ordinary city apartment. It is characterized by a noble aged texture, expressive (often bright) colors, and the use of various decorative elements, for example:
- figured metal door handles;
- door knockers;
- beautiful mailboxes;
- name door plates;
- over-door flower boxes;
- spectacular numbers on the doors – twisted metal, cut from plywood and beautifully painted.
By the way, the features inherent in the decoration of doors in the English style will be appropriate in the design of other directions, for example: country, fusion, retro and vintage interiors. They can also be used in pop art – if you use colors and motifs that match the style.
Also suitable for finishing old doors:
- craquelure coating (varnish with cracks);
- block painting, including using contrasting colors or different shades of the same color;
- glazed doors can be decorated using stained glass film or painting with stained glass paints;
- glazed doors can also be decorated with curtains made of patterned textiles – checkered, striped, floral, with a lace border or ribbons;
- the most daring ones can make a design on the doors using a stencil; it is done using a paint can or acrylic.
The motif for the stencil can easily be found on the Internet and printed in a photo workshop.
And most importantly, don’t be afraid to paint your doors bright colors! They should delight you and your guests, and create a mood before entering your home.
