Today the construction market is oversaturated with materials for ceiling decoration. Conventional whitewashing is a thing of the past, and its place is taken by one of the most popular types of finishing: plasterboard and suspended ceilings. Thanks to these materials, you can bring to life the most original ideas and plans. But first, let’s find out which ceiling is better – suspended or plasterboard.
Comparing suspended ceilings and plasterboard
These two types of ceiling design differ from each other, first of all, in the installation method. Before installing a plasterboard ceiling, it is necessary to mount a metal frame underneath it, onto which the plasterboard sheets will be attached. After this, all seams between the sheets are sealed, the surface is primed and painted. When working with drywall, a lot of dust and debris is generated, so it is advisable to remove all furniture from the room.
When installing a stretch ceiling, the number of operations is much less: a baguette is installed around the perimeter of the ceiling, then a PVC sheet is mounted, and decorative inserts are attached between the baguette and the sheet. These jobs are relatively clean and do not require the room to be completely cleared of furniture.
Installing a plasterboard ceiling is entirely within the capabilities of the owner himself, who has the necessary knowledge and knows how to hold a hammer in his hands. True, you still can’t do it without an assistant, but installing a plasterboard ceiling yourself will save significant money.

Both suspended ceilings and plasterboard can be made multi-level, avoiding the standard flat surface. This will bring a special zest and originality to the interior. A film ceiling can be glossy or matte, but a plasterboard ceiling can be painted in various colors, which will help it fit perfectly into the chosen interior style.
Both types of ceiling designs are quite durable materials. Experts assure that plasterboard ceilings can last up to 10 years without repair. If your upstairs neighbors flood you, it is possible to partially dismantle the plasterboard sheets and replace them with new ones.
Stretch ceilings can last even longer – up to 50 years. In addition, such ceilings provide reliable protection from water from above. If flooding occurs, the film will not tear, but will simply sag. In this case, you should call specialists, and they will quickly deal with the problem.
Many people are interested in the question of which ceiling is more environmentally friendly: suspended or plasterboard. There is no clear answer to this. If you buy PVC film for a stretch ceiling, which is accompanied by the necessary quality certificates, then you can be sure of its quality. Unscrupulous companies may use lower quality materials to make the film, and there is no need to talk about the environmental friendliness of such a coating. The same applies to plasterboard ceilings.
As you can see, it is impossible to unequivocally answer the question of which is better, suspended ceilings or plasterboard. So the choice is yours.
