Invention of polyurethane foam

Polyurethane foam is a dense polymer foam, one of the varieties of plastic. The material by 85-90% consists of air, which are filled with cells separated by PPU walls.

We often call polyurethane foam foaming, in fact it is the name of the Norwegian company “Porolon” producing PPU. For the first time, polyurethane foam was allocated in 1937 as a by -product in the manufacture of monolithic solid PPUs, and after 4 years in Germany the production of the first elastic foam rubber was launched.

Due to the porous structure, polyurethane foam perfectly isolates heat and sounds, has high amortizing qualities and the so -called memory effect, that is, after removing the load, takes the original form. We air duct, which protects the product from fungal formations.

By stiffness

First of all, polyurethane foam is classified according to the degree of stiffness, denoting this parameter in Latin letters:

Sheet PPU

• HS – soft PPUs made of polyol with softening additives, weight restriction – up to 60 kg, is used to fill the armrests, head restraints, removable elements and pillows

• ST is the standard material from the basic polyol, the load is withstanded up to 80 kg, used in multi -layer versions for children’s sofas, filling the armrests and headrests and the backs of non -interpretable sofas

• EL/HL-material of high rigidity, with a carrying capacity of 100-130 kg, is characterized by a long service life and reliability, used for the sofa mattress and backs in models with transformation, folding seats, orthopedic mattresses

• HR – high -class polyurethane, is used in the production of elite upholstered furniture, the non -production name is artificial latex, and is characterized by increased elasticity. The secret of the HR class PPU in the uneven cells in terms of the size and thickness of the walls, which react differently to the load and are endowed with excellent supporting properties. Less service – up to 20 years

• VE – viscous PPUs with the “memory effect” can adapt to the anatomical characteristics of the user and then quickly return the original form when removing the load.

To increase user comfort and give the sofa orthopedic properties as a filler use several layers of polyurethane foam with various characteristics.

By the method of production

Varieties of polyurethane foam

• Block /sheet, is a whole sheet or block that differs with thickness, dimensions and density. In the process of manufacturing furniture, the sheets are cut and connected with glue. The density of the sheets of PPU is indicated by color.

• Cast (molded) polyurethane foam is made by filling into the forms, receiving parts of different sizes and configuration at the output, in the form of ready -made parts from a whole piece of foam. The production of cast polyurethane foam is more expensive, which affects the cost of furniture. Cast PPU is characterized by high density and elasticity, excellent operational properties.

In the manufacture of sofas, polyurethane foam is used with a density of 30-40 kg/m3, which corresponds to the service life of 7-10 years. The sofa-subjects are repaired with a denser PPU in orthopedic properties.

Advantages of sofas with polyurethane foam

Foam sofas appeared not so long ago, previously springs, felt and other materials were used as a soft filler. The usual soft, elastic and durable fillings for upholstered furniture have appeared in the early 2000s and have been highly appreciated and recognized by consumers. The main advantages of PPU as a furniture filler include:

It is not difficult to choose a sofa with a filling of polyurethane foam if you know what requirements to present to it.

First of all, the sofa should be convenient, moderately soft and elastic. The best way to verify in convenience is to sit on the couch in different poses. The seat should not sag under the user too much, but not to be tough.

The low back of the sofa is not always convenient to operate, even if the filler is made of soft polyurethane foam, because such models are chosen as a place for daily sleep.
