There are two options for a product of this class:
- A moisture-resistant material based on an HDF board, which can be distinguished by its green joints or cuts. The connecting elements of such a laminate are usually treated with a special wax, which repels water and prevents it from getting under the floor. There is also an antibacterial impregnation that prevents the occurrence and proliferation of fungus, mold and bacteria. It can be used in rooms where there is high humidity.
- The waterproof material is extremely resistant to water, which is made possible thanks to its technological features. The laminate slab is pressed under very high pressure, and all joints are filled with hot wax, forming a monolithic product. The surfaces of the boards are coated with a polymer that repels water and prevents scratches.
How to choose a moisture-resistant laminate?
If before going to a hardware store you did not have time to understand the intricacies of such a product and are unable to determine its quality yourself, then you need to clarify the following nuances with the seller:
- laminate washability class. It should not be less than 32;
- Availability of quality certificates specifically for your coating batch;
- panel density, which must be at least 900 kg/cubic meter. This figure characterizes the strength of the material;
- treatment of the bottom layer of each board with moisture-resistant coatings, the presence of a layer of wax at the joints of the boards;
- is there a chamfer, since such a decorative addition to the laminate contributes to the accumulation of water.
If the choice has been made, take care of purchasing a special substrate. It is better if it is made from PVC.
Moisture-resistant laminate under tiles
Most housewives find it difficult to get used to tiled floors in the kitchen. But it becomes far from relevant, since it brings a feeling of cold to the entire room, and it’s quite easy to break one of the tiles. It is here that it is worth remembering the existence of a moisture-resistant laminate for the kitchen, the outer covering of which imitates ceramic tiles. It is also worth noting that moisture-resistant laminate for the bathroom will cost much less than tiles. This will in no way affect the quality of the final result: the floors will delight you with warmth, neatness and unusual appearance.
However, all the above-described characteristics of a moisture-resistant laminate do not mean that this coating can be subjected to prolonged contact with water. Problems can arise due to moisture penetrating the joints and deforming the base of the board. The result will be “wavy” floors that will have to be resurfaced.
