Modern interiors often use elements of antique and classical architecture. These can be frescoes, bas-reliefs, fireplaces, barrel vaults and beautiful artistic paintings. This also includes tall columns. Previously, they performed mainly a practical function (they supported the ceiling, served as a support), but today they are used for decoration or to hide communications. How can columns be used in the interior of a modern apartment and what is the best way to decorate them? More on this below.
Decoration of columns in the apartment
These decorative elements are most often used in classic interiors of private houses. They make the room especially majestic and solemn, emphasize its dimensions and create the feeling as if the ceilings are “floating” in the air. However, columns have also found use in modern apartments. The following design options look most advantageous:
- Separation of dining and living areas. Columns are great for zoning space. They look unobtrusive and simple, and at the same time visually divide the room into functional parts. If you decide to delimit two rooms, you can use wooden or stone columns.
- Columns in the bathroom. If you are planning to decorate your bathroom in a royal style, then this design element will come in very handy. Columns can be used to enclose the bathroom itself or install them near the washbasin. Please note that this will only be applicable in spacious rooms with high ceilings.
- In combination with a partition. This design looks natural in hallways and halls. Thanks to the partition, it is possible to achieve a more significant division of space, but due to the column, a feeling of lightness is created. If desired, the partition can be made a functional part of the interior by providing it with built-in shelves and doors.
- Bar counter. Racks usually use thin chrome rods to ensure structural stability. What if you show originality and replace the usual barbell with a luxurious column? In this case, the design will become more original, and the room will acquire a special luster.

In addition to the options listed, there are many other ways to use decorative columns in an apartment. They can be equipped with lighting, decorated with wild stone or painted in a bright color, installed in the corner of an apartment or even on a balcony in a private house.
