Folding doors are an excellent solution for cramped spaces and small apartments. But even if you have a spacious home, this in no way stops you from installing “accordions” and “books” if you simply like them.
In addition to the fact that folding doors play the role of interior doors, they are perfect for a dressing room or wardrobe. Functionality and affordable cost determine their purchase as the optimal solution.
Accordion folding door
The width of such a door can be anything, the height can be up to 3 meters. The number of panels is unlimited, since they can be attached and detached as individual units. The door is easy to install and maintain.
The material used to make an accordion-type folding door is usually polyvinyl chloride, which does not burn, does not emit harmful substances when heated, and is resistant to moisture. In some cases, it can be leather (natural and artificial) or fabric. Such doors can be installed in any room.
An accordion door requires a minimum of space; it does not move beyond the doorway at all, so the savings in valuable square meters are simply colossal.
However, due to the peculiarities of its design, this particular door is endowed with the worst noise and heat insulation performance. So it is more advisable to use it for a dressing room or closet, and certainly not as an entrance door, or at most an interior door.
Sliding folding door “book”
It resembles bus doors, consists of two leaves and, unlike the “accordion”, has a massive or frame door leaf, which is their undeniable advantage.
“Books” are heavier, stronger, more reliable. They are made from expensive wood species, covered with an expensive laminated coating, and veneer of noble wood species. Accordingly, they are equipped with more expensive and high-quality fittings.
Book-type doors can be solid or supplemented with stained glass. You can choose a design in accordance with the interior design and the functional purpose of the door.
What is good about such doors is that they save space, without blocking the entire corridor and allowing you to place furniture where it would not be possible with a regular hinged door. At the same time, they are identical in size to ordinary doors, so they in no way limit the passage through them.
Design features of folding doors
The opening and closing mechanism is the basis of any type of sliding door and its supporting structure. This mechanism consists of a rail (top guide) and fasteners to which the sash is suspended. The rail is made of metal and installed on the top of the doorway. Its visible part is covered with veneer for greater decorativeness, covered with varnish or laminate so that its finishing is combined with the finishing of the canvas and the opening.
The folding door fasteners are also made of metal. Its lower part is connected to the door leaf, while the upper part is inserted into the groove of the rail and moves along it when you open or close the door. Previously, this part was a ball with a rod welded to it that held the sash. However, due to constant friction, these two parts quickly failed, the entire mechanism creaked and got stuck. So today, manufacturers use bearings that can provide smoother and quieter sliding.
If the height of the door leaf is 2 meters or more, the door can additionally be installed on the bottom rail. This contributes to more reliable fastening of the sashes and their smaller vertical deviation.
