Brick for the basement

by decoredhome.com

The base, due to its close location to the ground and, accordingly, moisture, is subject to rapidly getting wet. It can be made of different materials, but is preferable, of course, a brick. Only now there are several types of bricks, so first you need to figure out which brick is better for the basement, and only after that make a final decision.

How to choose a brick for a basement?

Unfortunately, there is no unequivocal answer to the question which brick is better to use for the base. Much depends on certain parameters and features of the location of the house.

Usually, during the construction of the house, the owners have to make a choice between two types of brick for the basement – ceramic (burnt, red) and silicate (white).

As the main arguments in favor of one or another type, the main technical characteristics of building materials can be given. Having evaluated them, you yourself can determine which brick is needed for the basement.

Such characteristics include strength, moisture absorption and frost resistance. If we go in order and evaluate the strength of the two main types of brick, then they, of course, differ, but in short, we can say that both one and the second are fully coped with the load assigned to them. Naturally, we are talking about full -bodied bricks, since hollow a priori are not used for such purposes.

The second indicator is moisture absorption. The optimal indicator is 6-13%, and silicate brick completely falls into this framework, while ceramic sometimes goes beyond them, showing the level of up to 14%. Due to their characteristics of the internal structure, silicate bricks are quickly absorbed by the absorbed moisture, but ceramic delays it for a long period, which leads to its gradual destruction.

Frost resistance of the material directly depends on the previous indicator – moisture absorption. Accordingly, it can be argued that silicate brick will withstand more cycles of freezing and thawing.

However, red brick is more traditional and many prefer to use it. In justification, we can say that both types have the right to use at home during the masonry of the base.
