Today, a simple whitewashed ceiling can hardly surprise anyone, since many people prefer ultra-modern suspended structures. They allow you to quickly level an uneven wall surface without prior putty or primer. A suspended ceiling can be installed in the kitchen, balcony and other rooms of the apartment. When choosing a coating, it is advisable to be guided by the given design and operating features of the room.
Cassette suspended ceilings
The main elements of this coating are steel or aluminum plates, which are commonly called “cassettes”. The size of the suspended ceiling slabs is 30×30, 60×60 or 90×90 cm. The cassettes are mounted on a prepared iron frame, pre-attached to the ceiling. The scope of application of cassette ceilings is very wide: swimming pools, offices, medical centers, restaurants. In residential apartments they are used in the bathroom and kitchen, as the products are resistant to moisture and are difficult to ignite.
Depending on the type of materials, suspended cassette ceilings are divided into groups:
- Suspended metal ceiling. The base is galvanized steel. The slabs can have a smooth texture or have open cells in a round or square shape. The surface is painted with abrasion-resistant powder paint.
- Suspended aluminum ceilings. Available in the form of long slats or square cassettes. In the first case, the ceiling in the structure is clearly marked with each module (rail), and in the second, the surface seems continuous. As for the color scheme, any shades are presented here – from black to white. Surfaces with a mirror effect (achieved through chemical polishing) look very elegant.
- Suspended lattice ceiling. Can be made of either metal or aluminum. It also consists of square blocks, which in turn consist of small cells. Suspended raster ceilings are used mainly in industrial premises and shopping centers. It allows you to reliably “hide” communications, reduces noise levels and does not interfere with ventilation.

Wood, glass or plastic
If you want to decorate the ceiling at home with a suspended structure, it is better to turn to one of these materials. They are the ones that fit most organically into a living space and have no disadvantages from the point of view of operation. Depending on the type of material, the following types of suspended ceilings can be distinguished:
- Wooden suspended ceilings. Ceiling panels can be made from solid valuable wood, or from cheap wood covered with veneer. During installation, the panels are fastened together like a laminate or simply nailed to the floor beams. This option is perfect for decorating a country house, cottage or room in eco-style.
- Plastic suspended ceiling. Of all the options listed, it is considered the most budget-friendly and easiest to install. The only drawback is that panels for suspended plastic ceilings are prone to rapid fire. Area of application: hallway, balcony, bathroom.
- Glass suspended ceiling. The basis is durable silicate glass. Despite all the shortcomings (difficulty in installation, lengthy preparatory work, high cost), this design looks very unusual and fascinating. To enhance the effect, designers use built-in lights that create the illusion of depth.
- Moisture-resistant suspended ceilings with photo printing. They are made from PVC film with a pattern printed on it. Natural motifs and design drawings can be used as images.
