The proud ancient Romans or the sophisticated Greeks knew how to appreciate beauty. Even thousands of years later, people admire their works and want to add an exquisite antique touch to the interior of their beloved home. Stucco moldings or figurines are often not enough; you want something more majestic and grandiose. That is why decorative columns in the apartment were invented. Invented as an additional support for the ceiling, these elements in our homes now often serve more as room decoration, fulfilling a purely aesthetic role.
What are decorative columns made of?
Now you can find in the interior both decorative columns made of plaster and decorative columns made of polyurethane, stone or wood. Over time, natural materials are gradually being replaced by artificial ones, because if you use these structures only for beauty, then it is completely unnecessary to load your home with tons of concrete or granite. In addition, plaster, for example, makes it very easy to create things of the most fantastic shapes. But there are also some restrictions; if the structure is located outside, then the decorative column made of plasterboard will not last long. But granite, marble or artificial stone will last for decades even in rain and snow.
Basic materials for decorative columns:
- gypsum;
- marble;
- polyurethane foam;
- tree;
- malachite;
- different types of plastic;
- granite;
- concrete;
- artificial stone.
Decorative columns in the interior
Much in the choice of material for the construction of these interior elements depends on the style. If you need to emphasize the technogenic nature of the environment (loft, underground), then there is absolutely no need to decorate them in any special way. Even rough decorative concrete columns, devoid of refined finishing, are suitable for the apartment. But in a historical interior (classicism, baroque) these things look sloppy. Decorative columns made of polystyrene foam, plasterboard, wood, marble or other material, decorated with gilding and lined with luxurious stucco, will be relevant here.
There are several ways to use decorative columns in your setting:
- Place the column in the center of the room.
- To zone a room, you can create colonnades.
- Placement of columns in pairs. In this case, decorative wooden or other columns are placed on the sides of a window opening, fireplace, or staircase.
- The use of semi-columns – structural elements that imitate a real column, but protrude only half from the wall, to frame windows or niches.
We hope that the techniques listed here will help you effectively decorate your interior with decorative columns, making your home stylish and extremely beautiful.
