The final stage in renovating an apartment is installing the baseboard. With its help, you can hide the transition between the floor and walls, as well as hide many important communications. But which skirting board should you choose specifically for your apartment? If the repair is done carefully and the joints between the wallpaper and the flooring are minimal, then narrow strips can be used. They look unobtrusive and fit almost any interior. If you need to eliminate the shortcomings of the repair (uneven line of wallpaper, crooked walls), then it is better to use a wide baseboard. It will hide all the flaws and at the same time become an effective addition to the interior of the room. In addition, wide planks have the following advantages:
- Can be combined with any floor covering;
- look good in spacious rooms with high ceilings;
- additionally protect the wall from moisture and mechanical damage;
- due to the presence of a wide cavity, the cable channel can accommodate several wires and cables;
- With a high, narrow plinth, furniture can be placed as close as possible to the wall.
Wide plinth in the interior
Most often, this plinth is used in classic and minimalist interiors. Wide planks go well with painted plain walls. It’s good if the color of the walls is calm and unobtrusive, for example gray, cornflower blue, blue, beige, peach. If you need to focus attention on the door, you can finish the trim (profiled strips on the doorway) with the same plinth as on the floor. This way you will make the interior more harmonious and attract the attention of guests to the original design.
If desired, the theme of a wide plinth can also be used to decorate the ceiling. A structural baguette that will come close to the ceiling itself will be relevant here. Please note that a wide ceiling plinth visually reduces the height of the ceilings, so it should not be used in small, cramped rooms.
Model range
Today, the assortment includes several options for skirting boards, which differ in material, color and physical properties. Let’s look at the most popular models:
- Floor wide MDF skirting boards. Produced by pressing wood fibers. The front side is decorated with special paper that imitates a cut of wood. A melamine coating is applied to the paper, which will protect the design from fading and moisture in the future. MDF planks look good with parquet, laminate and linoleum.
- Floor wide wooden skirting boards. They are made from solid wood by splicing short pieces. Solid baseboards can be of two types: untreated products and already covered with oil/varnish. Installation of such a plinth occurs by shooting with metal pins or gluing to the floor with mounting adhesive. The main requirement for installation is perfectly smooth floors and walls.
- Wide PVC floor plinth. This option is the cheapest of all the above. This is due to the low cost of PVC raw materials and mediocre appearance. Decorators do not recommend combining plastic baseboards with parquet, as it will not look aesthetically pleasing and cheap. But with laminate, tiles and linoleum, PVC slats will look very organic.
- Polyurethane skirting. The latest fashion trend in interior decor. Products made from polyurethane have many structural surface solutions – from classic white to decorated with complex patterns. Another important advantage is that the plinth can be used when framing uneven surfaces.
