Many paid attention to roof structures resembling a small house. These are the so -called auditory windows. But their strange name has nothing to do with listening. They got their name from the name of the brigadier of the artel Plotnikov, who first built them on the roof of a large building, erected for celebration in 1817 of victory in the war with Napoleon. (By the way, this building still exists – this is a well -known Moscow arena). During the finishing work, there were problems with the wooden farms of the building – they began to bend and deal. The artist guessed that such windows are necessary to ventilate the attic part of the building and freedom of air circulation. Since then, such windows began to be called rumor (later auditory), and construction standards and rules and are currently recommending that the roof of any building must be with the auditory window.
Types of auditory windows
Over time, the auditory windows in the attic began to be used to illuminate the attic rooms, to reach the roof, and they began to successfully combine the functional load with some decorativeness. According to their constructive features (primarily in form), auditory windows can be divided into several types. The first type includes traditional triangular auditory windows.

The following are conical and rectangular. In the shape of the roof, auditory (attic) windows can also be panoramic (with a trapezoidal roof), with a single -sided roof and a bastard or with a fiber roof. The most practical and most often mounted is a gable auditory window, which can be both triangular and rectangular (as an option – square).

Sometimes, in order to give the building more decorativeness, arched (or semicircular) auditory windows, called the “bat”, can be built on the roof. No less decorative and round auditory windows. In addition, on the roofs, the slope angle of which is small, as a rule, segmented auditory windows are installed.

A few words about the material of the manufacture of auditory windows. The auditory windows are made the same (in terms of materials) as all the windows in the building. If wooden windows are installed, then the auditory window is also made of wood.

As an option – windows made of metal -plastic. In the case when the functions of the auditory window are reduced to the lighting of the attic, they can be glazed. But for the effective performance of the ventilation function, it is recommended to install blind auditory windows.

Mansard auditory windows
Above vertical auditory windows were considered. There is another type of windows that are sometimes attributed to a separate type. These are inclined or attic auditory windows. Their feature and main difference is that they are established in such a way as to form a single plane with the roof. For ease of operation, the attic windows are supplied with special, friction, hinges. Their use allows you to fix the window sash in any convenient position, while preventing spontaneous closing. At the same time, the frame (sash) itself, as it were, rotates on such loops (the angle of rotation is 180 °). Due to the special operating conditions, the attic windows have a limited size (the total area of not more than 1.4 sq.m. if necessary, the installation of windows of larger area is combined using special salaries in groups) and increased hardness of the frame.
