Practical and witty ways to put an old bed to good use

Remember the old beds – with spring mattresses and iron headboards? Once upon a time there were these in almost every home. Once upon a time, such beds stood in almost every home. Do you remember how pillows were also piled on top of them, covered with a lace cape? And on the backs there were certainly embroidered curtains hanging on strings… Anyone who spent summers in the village as a child is familiar with this picture. Anyone who spent summers in the village as a child is probably very familiar with this picture. Well, now, if such rarities remain anywhere, they are rarely used for their intended purpose. Now such rarities are gathering dust in dachas or have long since been sent to a landfill. But you can’t just take and get rid of good-quality property – you can’t raise your hand. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or maybe it’s banal practicality… I also have such a “legacy” in my old house, so I decided to look for ideas on how to usefully adapt it. I show and tell you what I found. Whether in the garden, in the vegetable garden… I’ll start with an idea that is banal and already set one’s teeth on edge – just so as not to return to it later. Flower beds and beds made from old beds once seemed original, but quickly became boring. And it’s hard to imagine a garden where such a design would look good. Even if the bed itself is cute – like this one, for example: A cute bed for a banal idea… in the form of a cabbage patch (photo below on the left) it looks, to put it mildly, a little strange, don’t you agree? This idea once seemed original, but quickly became boring. Such imitations are good for some garden exhibitions (where, I suspect, they once “came out to the people”), but outside the “garden podium” these delights did not take root for long. The idea may be good for a garden exhibition, but it is hardly viable in a real garden. But using strong backs as a support for plants is a viable and promising idea, in my opinion. Especially if these headboards themselves are elegant and generally look good: Iron headboards from beds can serve as a support for plants in the garden. And metal mesh on a welded frame – the basis of such beds – seems to be created in order to play the role of reliable supports for all kinds of vines: Metal mesh from old beds are ideal as reliable supports for vines. Why, craftsmen even make original supports for flowers from a spring mattress. A little heavy, in my opinion, but why not: Springs from a mattress will also work as a flower support. The idea of using bed headboards (or their fragments) as a basis for flower boxes or flowerpots does not raise any objections either. Here you get two in one: a frame on which it is convenient to attach containers, and a support for plants: You can hang a flower box on the headboard of the bed. And you can make a fashionable phytowall from a spring frame. I would just like to place the plants here thicker, more densely, so that they don’t look so lonely: Flower pots on a frame from an old bed Although a spring mattress is better suited for this purpose – there are already ready-made cells for plants: Spring mattress as a basis for a phytowall Read also:

Homemade cucumber support from the headboards of an old bed

Wickets and gates If the bed is really old, even antique, with an original and unusual back made of metal curls instead of thick, rough rods, you have in your hands a ready-made garden gate that is not particularly inferior to expensive forged models. Although, however, an ordinary metal back will also cope with this role. The back of the bed as a garden gate Then everything depends on the source material and conditions. The back can be turned vertically. Or even weld two together (of course, if the house has a welding machine and a master who knows how to use it). Or it could be like this… Someone even manages to make a whole fence out of bed headboards. But this idea, like the idea with a gate made of a spring mattress, seems controversial and ambiguous to me. A fence made from metal backs and a gate made from a box spring? Ambiguous… If non-standard solutions don’t bother you, but you don’t have the required number of beds in your household, look at other ideas for original fences and gates:

Ideas for original and unusual garden fences

Cheap and cheerful: designer fence made from ordinary branches

Ideas for beautiful wooden fences for a summer house

10 ideas for unusual garden gates

Benches and garden sofas Also, from parts from old beds and a couple of boards in skillful hands, you get a very necessary and useful thing for any garden – a comfortable bench. Garden benches True, this will also require some skills in working with metal, but there are many such masters among summer residents. And now, from two backs from an unnecessary iron bed, you get a wonderful, strong and neat bench: For such an alteration, you need skills in working with metal. And I also liked the wonderful vintage sofas with many pillows and cushions. But I’m afraid that you won’t be able to find “material” to make them now during the day—these models are made from cribs that were in use, it seems, even before I was born: Vintage sofas from iron cribs Of course, you can try to build a similar miracle from an ordinary “grandmother’s” bed, but it won’t turn out the same. Firstly, it’s bulky – different dimensions, completely different weight. And secondly, the design is different. But the idea is too good, you can rack your brains over its implementation… Such a sofa can be placed in the house, on the terrace, and in the garden. You can also restore an old bed. Without unnecessary frills, without fuss and ambiguous transformations – just make a bed… a bed! Reminiscent of antiquity, perhaps awakening childhood memories – but at the same time comfortable in a modern way and stylish in its own way. An old bed can be restored, and it will serve more than one generation. And here is a master class from our reader – to help those who also liked this idea:

Restoration of an old iron bed

For lovers of order, has it ever occurred to you that an iron mesh from an old bed would make a wonderful organizer or board for notes and all sorts of little things? So it didn’t come to me either. And someone thought: I definitely wouldn’t have thought of this myself. Here, judging by the size, parts of a baby crib are also used, but who said that the idea cannot be adapted to your conditions and capabilities? Someone, for example, equips their workplace with such a grid: Order in the workplace… … and someone stores shoes on it or uses it as a hanger for clothes: … and in the wardrobe And I thought: this is a great idea for organizing the storage of tools – be it gardening tools or any other. And on such a frame with a mesh you can store any tools. Moreover, in a barn, workshop or garage, such a design will not even cause surprise – unlike slightly controversial interior solutions. In the interior, such a design may not appeal to everyone, but in a workshop or garage it would be very appropriate. By the way, if you hang such a frame with a mesh right up to the ceiling, you can attach anything to it – from clothes to kitchen utensils, from medicinal herbs to decor and lamps. What happens if you hang a frame with a spring net from the ceiling? The main thing is to attach the base very, very securely. Still, a massive iron grate overhead is far from safe… From a cart to a chicken coop Some ideas for alterations seem crazy. For example, I would definitely not advise anyone to build a garden arch or pergola from the parts of an old bed: These are the ideas I would not repeat. Turning an iron bed into a mini-run for chickens, quails or rabbits is also an extraordinary idea. But on the other hand, it is at least practical. Although I still have my doubts about convenience. Original – no doubt, how convenient it is – the question But a garden cart-trailer made of a metal frame is certainly a useful thing in a country house: Such a cart will definitely come in handy in a country house And these doors are a practical idea, and also very easy to implement. It’s a pity, this protection won’t help against cats: they can even open ordinary doors at once, but they’ll jump over such a “gate” and won’t notice. But such a “gate” will not be a hindrance for cats. Someone adapts the headboards of the bed in the hallway as a hanger. Someone is making crazy lamps from spring mattresses. I didn’t expect there to be so many ideas. Which one did you like? What would you do with “grandma’s” old iron bed?
